Methodology

How we rank

Rankings come from public signals and community input. Businesses connected to Noemic are disclosed.

Where the order comes from

Each answer is ordered by an organic score built from public signals: the business's rating adjusted for how many reviews it has, review volume, how recent the reviews are, how complete the listing is, and distance when you search near a location.

Review analysis reads the reviews for recurring themes — what people praise and what they criticize — and counts how often each comes up. Those counts are shown in the evidence panel under every pick.

Rating, adjusted for review volume

A rating from a handful of reviews says little, so we never sort by raw stars. Each rating is pulled toward the average for that kind of business until it has enough reviews to stand on its own:

adjusted rating = (rating × reviews + category average × 35) ÷ (reviews + 35)

Example, with a category average of 4.4: a 4.8 from 2,000 reviews scores 4.79; a 5.0 from 7 reviews scores 4.50. The first ranks higher. Places with fewer than 5 reviews are only shown when there are not enough others.

The final score adds how recent the reviews are (the share from the last six months), what reviews say about the specific thing you asked for, and distance when you search near a location.

Second review sources

Google ratings can mislead in some categories; car dealer ratings, for example, mix sales and service complaints. For those categories we also look for an independent review site: DealerRater for car dealers, Healthgrades for doctors and dentists, Avvo for lawyers, Tripadvisor for hotels and attractions, the BBB for contractors.

When one is found, its score is shown beside ours with its own name, link and the date we checked. We only show a score we actually fetched, and we never blend sources into one number.

Roles on a shortlist

For questions like "best place to…" or "where should I…", each pick can carry a role written from data: highest rated after the volume adjustment, top score on the second source, closest to you, most reviewed, or open now. Each role states the fact behind it.

What the AI does, and doesn't

The summary and the "Why it's here" lines are written by AI from the data on the page and nothing else. It cannot add a business, change the order, or invent a rating, hours or a fact. Any line that cites something not in the data is discarded and replaced with a plain line built from the data.

Every answer carries the note "AI-generated from Noemic data; may contain mistakes." If something is wrong, say so in the conversation under the answer.

Community input

Members can discuss every answer, vote on posts, and add first-party reviews. That conversation sits under the answer for everyone to read. Owners who verify their business can reply with an Owner badge.

Thin pages

An answer page is listed for search engines only when at least 3 places qualify. Where the data isn't there yet, we say so rather than fill the page.
